LED Power Supply

The use of LED (Light Emitting Diode) lighting has become one of the most popular options in commercial and private spaces as they are known for better energy efficiency and more cost savings. There are a wide variety of parts and material used in LED lights to ensure that they perform at their best at all times.

One of the most important parts of any LED product is the power supply. It must be noted that power supply used for LEDs must be suitable as it will ensure that the power source is well regulated to be used in different types of environments.

There are in general 2 types of LED power supplies, namely Constant Current and Constant Voltage. In most cases, LEDs are more efficient when used with the Constant Current type. This is often referred to as a LED driver. Meanwhile, Constant Current output power supply is more conventional and hence they are defined as LED power supply. However, as they are all used in most LED devices today, both the terms could be used interchangeably.

In most of today’s LED light modules available in the market, they are made by connecting a series of LED lights either in a serial or parallel pattern. This will then form a certain string or cluster layout. If a particular LED light module is made with a Constant Current LED driver, then it would need an external Constant Voltage driver. In certain cases, a simple resistor device would be required to control the LED circuits and this would be the case where the Constant Voltage power supply will be used.

Apart from that, there are other situations where the Constant Voltage power supply would be needed like LED modules used in traffic information signs, large screen LED displays and backlit billboards or advertising panels. Under most circumstances, a Constant Voltage power supply looks very much like a typical power supply used to power up the common lighting modules while there are some which are customized to be used in specific environments.

On the other hand, a Constant Current LED power supply is used in modules which are not made with Constant Current module internally, then it would need one to be installed externally. There are many types of Constant Current LED power supply configurations which are usually customized for a specific purpose, designed to withstand different types of environments and weather type as these modules can be used both indoor and outdoor.
